As President Donald Trump and Elon Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) slash through federal spending, the US debt clock went passed the $36 trillion mark. At the time of writing this story, the realtime digital display was at about thirty-six trillion, five hundred billion, six hundred eighty-five million, six hundred thousand dollars.

This comes days after the debt clock platform added a section for DOGE savings, which is close to $114 000 000 000 (one hundred fourteen billion). The data is yet to be verified by the White House. As of fiscal year 2024, the US debt was $34 trillion, according to the US Treasury Department. The figure was nearly as large as the US economy.

Is Donald Trump And Elon Musk's Plan Failing?

Earlier this month, President Trump wrote on Truth Social: “BALANCED BUDGET!!!” Elon Musk added on X, “Balanced budget is going to happen.”

Trump has called for steep tax cuts, extending his 2017 tax law to eliminate tax on tips, overtime pay and Social Security. However, experts believe this is not enough.

“It’s rhetoric versus reality. And it’s always popular to say, ‘I’m reducing the deficit.’ And it’s also popular to distribute a bunch of goodies, and this president is well known for that. So I don’t think their rhetoric matches reality,” Marc Goldwein, senior policy director at CRFB, told NBC News.

He further added that Trump is not the first president to make such bold promises. “But the order of magnitude is totally different here. They’re talking about balancing the budget on the one hand, where on the other they’re making the problem 25% to 50% worse.”
